The Central Business Names Index of Swiss companies, administered by the Federal Office of Justice, provides, within its freely accessible database, information on trade names, registration numbers and legal domiciles (political municipality). Searches can be carried out by trade name or identification number. The Index also provides access to cantonal commercial registers, as some Swiss companies are registered only in these. Most cantons have their own commercial register. Several of them provide full records free of charge, others charge for advanced information, while basic data, such as trade names and registration numbers, can be obtained free of charge. The range of fees depends on the particular cantonal commercial register. However, not all commercial registers contain data on all corporate legal forms. Generally, only the Swiss equivalents of stocks and shares companies are registered. General or limited partnerships and sole proprietors have been subject to registration since 1st January 2000. All data is searchable in English, Italian, German and French.
